Colbert Congress

Today saw Stephen Colbert address congress regarding the claims undocumented immigrants are taking work away from Americans. Colbert addressed the issue on behalf of the UFW (United Farm Workers) who have been raising awareness about the fact this isn't true regarding farm work and that regular Americans would rather be on welfare and unemployed than spend a day doing hard manual work on farms.

Colbert spent a day working in the fields, and he testified that he will never do it again. Unfortunately, Colbert chose to make his remarks as humorous as possible, and while his speech is entertaining, I don’t think anyone took him seriously. Rep. Steve King has already said he felt that Colbert was mocking the hearing process, and since much of Colbert’s humor revolves around mocking the political process, that’s a reasonable assumption. It appears that the hearing was more about drawing attention to the comic than about the employment issue.

The first gambling hall in Philadelphia, Sugarhouse Casino, will open today after much delay and debate. Philadelphia goes right up into the same league as Las Vegas and Atlantic city in the gambling stakes as gamblers can celebrate the right to gamble in their own city.

Those who support the initiative say that the casino will work as an economic engine for Philadelphia and will attract many tourists from all over the world. The other party show their indignation, as in their opinion SugarHouse Casino will create a gap between the local high rollers and the poverty of the city.As the opening party is about to begin, they all will have to accept the idea that the casino is now part of the Philadelphia experience for anyone.
Inside of the SugarHouse casino one can find 1,600 slot machines and 40 tables for games like roulette and poker. Over $ 1 billion in gaming taxes are expected to flow towards the City of Philadelphia in the first five years of activity.

Days after Russell Brand was seized by police for attacking a photographer who aimed a camera up his fiance, Katy Perry's dress, Katy Perry sees her stint on Sesame Street pulled for being too racy due to the singer showing ample cleavage in a revealing dress. The show's bosses deemed it unsuitable for the pre-schoolers who make up the bulk of the show's audience.

"In light of the feedback we've received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on You Tube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers," the show's producers said in a statement. "Katy Perry fans will still be able to view the video on You Tube."In the video, which earned over 1 million views on YouTube Monday, Perry is seen bouncing after Elmo while singing a version of "Hot N Cold" that focuses on the puppet waffling over their play date instead of an up-and-down relationship. Jesse Jackson was at the centre of 2 scandals yesterday as reports emerged that he tried to pay for a U.S. senate seat and also that he was involved in a relationship with another woman, when he has a wife. He denies he ever tried to buy a senate seat and says the relationship issue was a matter him and his wife dealt with some time ago.

The story claims that during a meeting October 8, 2008, Congressman Jackson had asked political moneyman Raghuveer Nayak to raise millions in exchange for an appointment to Barack Obama's vacated seat. Nayak reportedly told the FBI he bought round-trip airplane tickets for Huidobro. The revelation is providing political fodder for Jackson's congressional opponent and could harm his political future. As for his relationships, his office released a statement saying, "The reference to a social acquaintance is a private and personal matter between me and my wife that was handled some time ago. I know I have disappointed some supporters and for that I am deeply sorry."

A fire broke out on the New York railway bridge and caused a delay in train services for four hours on the Metro North commuter train service to and from Grand Central Terminal yesterday afternoon according to a spokesperson. What caused the fire is currently a mystery and it's being investigated by the fire department of New York.

The blaze was battled by 60 fire fighters from just before noon, with the fire being under control by 1 pm, said fire department spokesman Frank Dwyer. No injuries had been reported, he said. Trains resumed their regular timetable by 4:15 pm, following an inspection of the Metro North, which showed the signals and power system was in working order. The part of the bridge affected was the 138th Street lift bridge over the Harlem River.According to Aaron Donovan, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, trains leaving Grand Central Station were not halted by the fire. The Metro North is a high traffic train line, taking over 135,000 passengers to and from Grand Central Station a day.

Now 50 years old, she was last seen dancing in the 1987 movie, has been captured on the camera rehearsing with her partner Derek Hough.

In the classic Dirty Dancing, in spite of Gray and her costar Patrick Swayze popularly perfecting the lift in the classic blockbuster romance, since then her dancing skills have been going downhill. Gray has told to a popular magazine recently.When the she was asked if she feels like the frontrunner, she answered that she did not feel so at all till now! She has also added that everyone has different strengths and different weaknesses, and that she has got handful of both.Gray revealed to the magazine that she had signed up for the show as she is of the belief that it is going to be really fun. And she believes that the shows will undoubtedly a new challenge for her and she will accept it with a positive attitude.

tyler colvin video

A freak incident in a baseball game today saw Tyler Colvin of the Chicago Cubs, get injured from shards of a splintered baseball bat and in turn saw him taken to hospital to see the full extent of the injury. At the moment Doctors are saying there is minimal internal bleeding but they will need to do more tests and x rays to see the extent of the wound below the left collarbone.

The incident was all caught on tape when Colvin, was hit by the shards in a game against the Florida Marlins at the Sun Life Stadium. Colvin was running the bases when the bat of Welington Castillo broke and part of it struck Colvin in the chest leaving a puncture wound on the left side. A chest tube was inserted to prevent a collapsed lung. Colvin was able to score before being rushed to the hospital. He is currently tied for major-league rookie lead after 20 homers but there are only 13 games left in the season and it doesn’t look likely that he’ll be able to play for the rest of this year.

first day of fall 2010

This Wednesday sees the first day of the Autumn season. This is the case for all countries in the northern hemisphere such as all of Europe, Russia, the United States and Japan whereas all countries in the southern hemisphere such as Australia, South Africa and all of South America, don't experience this season till the following March.

Though known as autumn all around the world, America is used to call this season the “fall”. It is one of most awaited seasons in the country. The first day of fall 2010 is going to be heralded with a lot of joy by people as it signals the end of summer.The first day of fall 2010 also brings us closer to Halloween. Though fall marks a transition from hot to cold weather, it is not the case with every place. For instance, Florida, which has year- round warm weather, will not really see a drastic change in weather as most locations.As fall starts, there will be little people will be thinking about other than what Christmas presents to buy and for whom.

boardwalk empire

Tonight is the debut of new HBO show which stars Steve Buscemi, of Reservoir Dogs fame, and is set in Atlantic City through the prohibition era in the United States and focuses on crime families striving to make ends meet by bootlegging. There definitely are parallels with the smash hit series The Sopranos and Boardwalk empire is directed by none other than legendary director Martin Scorsese.

Scorsese immediately sets the tone for the 12-episode season, combining the best elements of gangster films he loved with some of the classics he's made himself. That means thrills, brutality, sex, menace and a few laughs - the kind of formula that helped make that other series bout illegal entrepreneurs of New Jersey HBO's crowning achievement - until now. Comparisons will clearly be drawn by most people between the show and the Sopranos, word is from previews people have seen of the first episode, it lacks a bit of extra charm the sopranos had but it is still probably too early to know and definitely deserves a chance if you're a fan of this sort of drama.
